GST Basics
What is GST?
GST, Or Goods And Services Tax, Is A Single Indirect Tax Charged On The Supply Of Most Goods And Services Across India, Replacing Older Taxes Such As VAT, Service Tax, And Excise Duty. It Is Collected At Every Stage Of The Supply Chain But Is Ultimately Borne By The Final Consumer, With Businesses Able To Claim Credit For The GST They Have Already Paid On Their Purchases. GST Rates Are Set In Slabs, So Different Categories Of Goods And Services Attract Different Rates Depending On Their Classification.
GST Calculation
How is GST Calculated?
GST Is Calculated By Applying The Applicable Slab Rate To The Taxable Value Of Goods Or Services, And This Amount Is Then Split Between Central GST (CGST) And State GST (SGST) For Transactions Within The Same State, Or Charged Entirely As Integrated GST (IGST) For Transactions Between Different States. If The Amount You Have Is GST-Inclusive, The Tax Portion Must Be Extracted From The Total Rather Than Added On Top, Which Is Why Choosing The Correct Calculation Method Matters For Accurate Invoicing.
Cess Explained
Understanding Compensation Cess
GST Compensation Cess was an additional charge introduced in 2017 on top of the standard GST rate for select luxury and sin goods such as premium cars, SUVs, tobacco products, and aerated beverages — designed to compensate states for revenue losses after GST implementation. Following the GST 2.0 reform effective 22 September 2025, this separate cess was removed for most goods and folded into a single consolidated GST rate instead — for example, aerated drinks and luxury cars now attract a flat 40% GST with no separate cess line. Tobacco products moved to their own separate excise and health cess framework outside the GST system from 1 February 2026, alongside a flat 40% GST rate (18% for bidis). As a result, most invoices today no longer carry a separate Compensation Cess line — our calculator still includes the field for reference and for any pre-reform transactions still being reconciled.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions - GST
What Is The Difference Between CGST, SGST, And IGST?
CGST And SGST Are Charged Together On Transactions Within The Same State, With Each Making Up Half Of The Total GST Amount. IGST Is Charged Instead Of CGST And SGST When The Transaction Happens Between Two Different States, And The Full GST Amount Goes Under This Single Head.
How Do I Know If A Transaction Is Intra-State Or Inter-State?
A Transaction Is Intra-State If The Supplier And The Place Of Supply Are In The Same State, Which Means CGST And SGST Apply. It Is Inter-State If The Supplier And The Place Of Supply Are In Different States, In Which Case IGST Applies Instead.
What Is Compensation Cess And Which Items Does It Apply To?
Compensation Cess was an additional levy charged on top of the standard GST rate for luxury and 'sin' goods — including premium cars, SUVs, tobacco, pan masala, aerated drinks, and coal — introduced in 2017 to compensate states for GST-related revenue losses. Under the GST 2.0 reform effective 22 September 2025, Compensation Cess was removed for most of these goods, with the tax incidence merged into a single higher GST rate instead (for example, aerated drinks and luxury vehicles now attract a flat 40% GST rather than 28% GST plus cess). Tobacco and related products moved to a separate Health and National Security Cess and excise duty framework outside GST from 1 February 2026. In practice, most GST invoices today no longer include a separate Compensation Cess line — it mainly remains relevant for reconciling older, pre-reform transactions.

What Is The Difference Between GST-Inclusive And GST-Exclusive Amounts?
A GST-Exclusive Amount Is The Price Before Tax Is Added, While A GST-Inclusive Amount Already Has GST Built Into The Total Price. Our Calculator Supports Both — Simply Toggle The "Amount Includes GST" Option Depending On How Your Amount Is Structured.
Do All Products And Services Have GST?
No, Certain Essential Items Such As Fresh Fruits And Vegetables, Unpackaged Food Grains, And Some Healthcare And Educational Services Are Either Exempt From GST Or Taxed At A Nil Rate. Most Other Goods And Services Fall Under One Of The Standard GST Slabs.
How Often Do GST Rates Change?
GST Rates Can Be Revised By The GST Council From Time To Time Based On Government Notifications, So It Is Important To Verify Current Rates For High-Value Or Unusual Transactions Rather Than Relying On Older Information.
