What is Society Registration?


A society is a group of individuals with a collective interest toward a common goal.

Societies are registered to promote charitable activities such as education, religion, music, art, culture, etc.

Society is registered under the Society Registration Act, of 1860 which enforced rules for the registration and functioning of such societies.

It is important for a society to have at least 7 persons for incorporation. Indian citizens, foreigners, companies & other registered societies can also partake in the formation of a new society as members.

A society can be unregistered too, but only a registered society is legally privileged to own and manage properties.

State Governments are authorized to register societies and hence an application must be submitted to the State Government department and specifically to the office in the area where a society has decided to maintain its registered office.


Purpose of Society Registration


A Society Registration can be done for the development of fine arts, science, or literature or else for the diffusion of purposeful knowledge or charitable purposes of political education. According to Section 20 of the Society Act, of 1860 a Society Registration for the following purposes:

  • Promotion of fine arts
  • Diffusion of political education
  • Grant of charitable assistance
  • Promotion of science and literature
  • Creation of military orphan funds
  • Maintenance or foundation of galleries or public museum
  • Maintenance or foundation of reading rooms or libraries
  • Promotion or diffusion or instruction of useful knowledge

Once this is done, the registrar of societies will sign the first copy as acknowledgment and return it while keeping the second copy for approval. If everything is alright, an incorporation certificate along with a registration no. is issued and the society is officially registered.

Types of Societies for Registration


  1. Charitable Societies: These societies are formed to undertake charitable activities such as poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, relief work during disasters, etc.

What are the steps for Society Registration in India?

Step 1

Apply to the Registrar of Societies.

Step 2

A Name is a must as the initial step towards registering a society. The name must be unique and shouldn't be already in use by an existing society.

Step 3

It is important that a memorandum of association be created which clearly states the rules and regulations of the society, its objectives, names of members, their addresses, occupations, and other relevant details.

Step 4

This MoA needs to be signed by every member of the society in the presence of a Gazetted officer, Chartered Accountant, Advocate, Notary Public, Oath Commissioner, and 1st Class Magistrate with their official stamping and complete address.

ID Proof

Scanned copy of PAN Card, Voter ID, Passport , Driving License

Registered Office Proof

No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the owner, Utility bill (should not be older than two months) and Notarized Rent agreement (in case of rented property) / Registry Proof or House Tax Receipt (in case of owned property)

Address Proof

Latest Bank statement/ Utility bill in the name of director which should not be older than two months

The following documents are required to complete this process.


  • PAN Card of all the members of the new society.
  • Residence proof of all the members (Passport, Driving License, Aadhar, Utility Bill, Bank statement, etc.)
  • Memorandum of Association (MoA) stating details of all the members and their roles, addresses of the members, and objectives regarding the smooth functioning of the society.
  • Rules and regulations in a written format.
  • A cover letter highlighting the objectives and functions of the society, to be signed by all the founding members of the society.
  • A copy of the Proof of Address of the registered office of the society supplemented with NOC from the landlord.
  • A list of all the members.
  • A declaration was given by the president stating their willingness to join and accept their designated responsibilities.
